Ceramic & Porcelain Tile
Most people are familiar with ceramic tile. It has been commonly used for many decades. Ceramic tile is made of a fired clay body that is glazed on the surface to give it color and texture. Ceramics are intended for light industrial applications, and therefore a great product for your home.
Porcelain tile was initially created for outdoor applications because of it's frost resistance. With new glazing technologies, however, it can now be offered in an infinite number of colors and textures. Some porcelain tiles have been given the appearance of marble, granite, slate and other natural stones. Unlike natural stone however, porcelain tile does not need special maintenance. Because of it's density (very difficult to scratch), and extremely low absorption rate (resists staining), porcelain is a great alternative to natural stones.
Johnnie's Tile & Marble has a wide variety of ceramic and porcelain tile, therefore we can provide you with a multitude of colors and textures for your project. Many of our tiles come in several different sizes with coordinating trim and decoratives. With the different sizes we can choose a pattern and use decoratives to add a unique touch. The coordinating trim pieces can give your project a completed look by wrapping the curbs of showers, tubs, vanities, stairs, and much more.

Hand Crafted Tile
Hand-crafted tiles each have unique characteristics. These tiles will all vary in size, texture, and color consistency.
Unlike the mass produced ceramics, hand crafted tiles are individual works of art. They are individually formed by an artisan who presses them into a mold, which, alters the surface for the desired effect.
Custom glazes are applied at various stages of the production process. Variables, such as temperature, humidity, and the method that is used to apply the glaze, can effect the way the glazes react in the kiln firing process.
It is impossible to repeat this process with exactness each time. This must be remembered when making a selection. If you are concerned about this process, perhaps choosing a ceramic or porcelain would be wise.

Natural Stone
Before purchasing any tile or stone product, you must understand that stone is created by nature and has natural variations. No two pieces are alike. It will come with variations of colors and characteristics that are outside of human control. Please understand that natural stone can be damaged by normal use. Different stones have different levels of damage resistance, therefore all natural stone must have some measure of care and maintenance. ALL NATURAL STONE ARE AVAILABLE IN TILES.
Granite is an igneous rock formed from volcanic lava that has cooled and hardened. With the exception of diamonds, it is the hardest of stones and can only be cut with a diamond blade. Because of it's density, it can be used anywhere in your home. Most people use it for kitchen counter tops, but that is just the beginning. It can be used on your floors, showers, tubs, etc. Johnnie's Tile & Marble now has new finishes and edging options. We can brush or hone your granite. It gives you a completely different look than what you normally see from polished granite. Or, if you think that a granite slab may not fit into your budget, we offer granite tiles that cost about a third less than slab. We even have trim available for some of our granite tiles.
Limestone is a sedimentary rock that is formed as sediment collects at the bottom of the ocean and is compressed over hundreds of years. Most limestone are characterized by their uniform color appearance with embedded fossils and seashells. Limestone is typically available in a honed or matte finish (smooth but not reflective). Limestone is an elegant alternative to marble, without the formal appearance.
Travertine is formed the same way as limestone. The difference being, gas bubbles are trapped during the creation of Travertine, therefore holes are formed. These holes are usually filled by the manufacturer before the stone is sold with an epoxy filler in a similar color as the stone. Travertine may also be purchased as honed or unfilled if you prefer. If you purchase the tiles unfilled, the holes will be filled with your grout during installation.
Marble is a metamorphic rock that began as limestone, but was heated and cooled, compressed and released, to form a stone, characterized by its multiple colors and veins. Marble has been used for centuries in Europe for tiles, countertops, carved columns, and statues. It is most often sold with a polished finish, but can easily be antiqued with a tumbled or brushed finish.
Slate is a sedimentary rock that forms in flaking layers; which, create the natural cleft surfaces that characterize the stone. This clefting limits slate to being sold as tiles. Larger Slate pieces result in too much breakage. The clefted surfaces dictate that manufacturers will NOT be able to achieve uniform tile thickness, therefore the installation requires a medium mud bed. Slate is an excellent flooring material for mudrooms, kitchens, sunrooms, and foyers. It's rustic appearance and tremendous color variation helps to hide dirt and stains. Johnnie's Tile & Marble has slate available in many forms including tiles, mosaics, decoratives, and much more.
